Dog’s Diseases

Tinea capitis and tetter are the diseases caused by pathogenic lower fungi, which are characterized by nidal losses of hair and by inflammatory processes on the skin. There are trichophytosis and microsporia, which have a joint name “Tinea capitis” and “tetter”. Many species and a human can be taken ill with it.

Dogs of all ages can be taken ill. One of the most widespread is trichophytosis, microsporia is infrequent, and tetter is the rarest.

Causative agents of these dermatomycosises are such pathogenic fungi as Trichophyton, Microsporum and Achorion, if any of it is in contact with a skin, and there are microcracks or lowering of body resistance, it spreads on epidermis, corium, hair follicles and in hair. Dog’s organism reacts to penetration of fungi by inflammatory process. Malnutrition and an inflammation of follicles lead to shedding of hair. Fungi form spores which are steady and remain in an environment over a long period of time.

Trichophytosis and microsporia, also called “Tinea capitis”, are characterised by appearance of some rounded bald patch on a skin of a head or in other places. In a place of lesion dog’s hair comes out, there are protuberances and crusts. Skin becomes red, swells up a little, pus forms under these crusts. Dog does not suffer from itch and usually does not scratch affected areas of the body raw. Tetter (favus) becomes apparent by formation of thick greyish-yellow crusts on a skin. Spontaneous recovery is possible. But hairless places will remain on the skin during a long time.

Dog’s ringworm distinguishes itself from other skin diseases by a combination of symptoms: a limited falling out of hair, crusts and absence of itching. During treating your skin with ultraviolet light (Wood’s lamp), affected areas by fungus Microsporum luminesce by yellow-green light. Illness can be diagnosed only after laboratory researches.

The policy of treatment of dermatomycosis depends on nature of lesions; it can be localized or disseminated. At first shear a hair in a place of lesion and 1-2 cm around. Healthy parts of a skin are notable for paler color. You must burn out cut hair. Process affected areas of the skin with one of these medicines:

1) 10 % solution of salicylic acid in collodion;
2) 10 % solution of salicylic acid in 5 % alcoholic iodine solution – 2-3 times a day;
3) 1 % ointment or liniment of yuglon – on alternate days;
4) 10 % alcoholic solution of iodine – on alternate days.

Last two medicines not only prove fatal to activators of dermatomycosises, but can cause a necrosis of superficial skin and provoke contact dermatitis.

Dialogues between your dog and a dog, fallen ill with dermatomycosises must not be allowed. It is impossible to use somebody else’s combs, for example. Vaccinal prevention is perfectly developed.
